Are Candles Bad For Dogs?

Candles offer a relaxing ambience at home, but in our pet-friendly households, it's natural to question their safety for our furry friends. While most candles are safe, a few exceptions exist that warrant caution.

Understanding Wax Types

Choose your candle wax wisely for a healthier andeco-friendly ambience. Steer clear of paraffin wax due to its emission of carcinogens and unsustainable nature.

Safer Candle Wax Options for Your Dog:
Rapeseed Wax:

Slow burn, powerful scent. Most sustainable with a minimal carbon footprint. Soot-free and biodegradable.
Soy Wax:
Soybean oil production may contribute to deforestation, so check for sustainable sourcing. Soy candles produce less soot, burn slightly shorter, and have a milder scent.
Coconut Wax:
Limited availability and higher cost.High-yield and sustainable crop. Fragrance intensity may vary, but burn time is good.
Beeswax:
Oldest, eco-friendly option for honey production. It is not the best at holding fragrances and is not vegan-friendly.

Choosing A Safe Scent for Dogs

Scented candles infused with essential oils may seem cleaner, but they can pose risks to your dog's health. Dogs, like humans, can be sensitive to fragrances and develop allergies to specific essential oils, resulting in symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, breathing difficulties, or asthma.

If your dog tends to explore and ingest things they shouldn't, it's crucial to avoid candles containing particular essential oils and keep them away from reach. Ingesting these oils can lead to various issues, including stomach upset, damage to the liver and nervous system, and a decrease in heart rate.

Before lighting a candle, always check the label for potential hazards. Common culprits include peppermint, pine, tea tree, wintergreen, cinnamon, citrus, and birch.

How to Keep your Dog Safe Around Candles

Your furry friend's unique charms and behaviours are familiar to you like no one else. If your dog appears under the weather, consult your veterinarian for expert advice. Safeguard your pet's well-being by keeping candles out of their reach, particularly for interested bench surfers or coffee table-wagging tails.
