Real routines, real results - Onyx
Every dog is different - their lifestyle, their coat, their skin, and the way they’re cared for day to day. These stories are a look into real routines, shared by dog parents who are navigating everything from muddy paws to weekly baths and ongoing skin care. Honest, practical, and lived - because good dog care is never one-size-fits-all.
Meet Onyx
Onyx is a 2.5-year-old Bulldog x Staffy (with a suspected hint of Dachshund somewhere in the mix).
He’s sweet, a little shy, chilled out, and happiest when he’s close to his mummy. Mornings start slowly. Sometimes he’s still curled up in bed when his mum wakes him, followed by a quick trip outside, breakfast, and then straight back to the couch for a cuddle while the coffee is made.
From there, it’s usually back to bed - either his own, or his mum and dad’s - for most of the morning. Onyx isn’t a high-energy dog. He’s calm, content, and very good at it.
A Slower Pace, Done Well
Afternoons are where Onyx comes to life.
This year, his mum has made it a priority to get him out more - not because he needs the exercise, but because he genuinely enjoys being out in the world. Whether it’s a trip to the pet store for a bath, a visit to the local pub The Little Taphouse, or settling in at a café, Onyx is the kind of dog who can come anywhere and quietly fit in.
He doesn’t need much - a short walk, a bit of play with his favourite ball, time in the sun with his sister Ruby - and he’s happy.
Evenings are simple: dinner, the couch, and winding down for the night.
Managing Ongoing Skin & Coat Sensitivities
Like many dogs, Onyx’s skin hasn’t always been straightforward.
He’s prone to sore, red, and itchy ears, along with dryness through his coat - particularly along his back, where dandruff can appear. At times, depending on the season, his paws can also become red and irritated.
Managing this isn’t about one single fix - it’s a full routine.
His diet plays a role (a single-protein fish-based food has worked best), and different supplements have been trialled over time. But when it comes to topical care - what goes directly onto his skin and coat - consistency has made the biggest difference.
Building a Routine That Works
Onyx is bathed every one to two weeks, depending on what he’s been up to.
His routine is simple but intentional. He gets a full cleanse with Fur Love's shampoo, followed by the conditioning mask with extra attention given to moisture and skin support.
While the shampoo does the job of properly cleansing his coat, it’s the conditioning mask that has made the most noticeable difference - bringing moisture back into the coat and significantly reducing visible dryness and dandruff.
Adapting the Routine to Real Life
Because Onyx is a bigger dog, his baths usually happen at a local pet store wash station which means traditional paw soaking isn’t possible.
Instead, his routine has been adapted. A small amount of paw soak is sprinkled directly onto his paws and worked in gently by hand. While the rest of his coat is being washed and conditioned, the soak sits on his paws, giving it time to do its job before being rinsed away.
It’s a simple adjustment, but one that’s made a visible difference - helping to reduce redness and support overall paw comfort.
Consistency Over Time
What stands out most in Onyx’s routine isn’t a dramatic overnight transformation - it’s the steady improvement that comes with consistent use of these products. He has less dryness, less visible dandruff, and calmer paws. And just as importantly, peace of mind in knowing exactly what’s being used on his skin.
A Thoughtful Approach to Care
Caring for a dog like Onyx is about doing the right things, consistently.
From his diet to his environment to his skincare routine, everything works together. And while no single product does everything, having a routine that supports his skin properly has become an essential part of his care.
Because when a dog is naturally calm, settled, and content like Onyx - keeping their skin comfortable is what allows them to stay that way.
